Spectral searching capabilities for Agilent MSD ChemStation enhanced

Thermo Galactic, a Thermo Electron business (NYSE: TMO) a leading company in desktop spectroscopy informatics solutions and services, announces that it has released a new version of its interface program for the MSD ChemStation from Agilent Technologies and Thermo’s Spectral ID desktop software tool for searching through spectral data. Spectral ID allows users to search user-created spectral libraries or commercial libraries from sources such as Sigma-Aldrich,Chemical Concepts, Thermo Nicolet, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA, and Wiley (Plate 6).
The latest generation of the ChemStation- to-Spectral ID link reportedly offers much improved data mining functionality over the MSD ChemStation’s built-in spectral searching tool. The new release also supports the most recent versions of the MSD ChemStation, which utilise NT-based Windows operating systems (i.e. Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP). This is said to allow MSD ChemStation users to benefit from the improved performance,flexibility and application security of the latest Windows operating systems while conducting complex searches on spectra.

Users of the in-built MSD ChemStation searching tool are currently limited to the probability-based matching (PBM) algorithm for searching mass spectral libraries. Spectral ID uses the more popular and highly regarded NIST algorithm for searching.
Commenting on the new release, Don Kuehl, president of Thermo Galactic stated: “The latest version of the ChemStation-to-Spectral ID link offers single click access to Spectral ID from the ChemStation menu and seamless integration. ChemStation’s own search tool stalls once it finds the first matching hit, ignoring libraries that were selected by the user but have yet to be searched. This means it also ignores any matching hits in those libraries. In contrast, Spectral ID searches all the selected libraries without interruption,ensuring that all the best matching hits are returned from those libraries. Spectral ID is believed to represent an ideal searching supplement for the undoubted power of the ChemStation’s functionality and, with the new link,customers can get all the benefits from the latest NT-based operating systems.”
Spectral ID is thought to be the most comprehensive spectral search software available. It is said to be easy-to-use, fast, and compatible with over half a million spectra from hundreds of commercial libraries. Spectral ID is stated to be capable of creating and searching libraries for many analytical techniques such as MS, IR, Raman, UV-VIS, Fluorescence, NIR, and other data types. Spectral ID is developed and supported by Thermo Galactic, which along with Thermo LabSystems comprises the informatics Division of Thermo Electron.
