IIR Exhibitions has met with the Ipex Advisory Committee (IAC) to discuss new ideas for the next Ipex Exhibition, which will be held from 18-25 May 2010
The meeting was attended by international exhibitors, visitor groups and trade associations, who all provided input into the direction of the show.
Ipex 2010 will be staged at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham(UK).
George Clarke, the President of Ipex 2010 and Managing Director of Heidelberg UK, said: “Ipex was attended by more than 100,000 visitors in 2006. We’re determined to make Ipex 2010 an even better experience for this global audience and we look forward to meeting with the IAC throughout the planning stages, to build on Ipex’s consistent growth and success”.
The next meeting between IIR and IAC will be held in either November or December.
Training
Market research in the coatings industry
This leading edge one-day workshop provides an introduction to “business to business” market research (MR), with special emphasis on the coatings industry.
Good information and data underpins all business decisions and should be an integral part of company activity at all levels. MR can be vital in understanding how to provide a competitive edge and enable a company to optimise its market positioning and offering, essential in the highly competitive coatings industry.
The workshop will give participants a clear understanding of MR as well as the practical skills and tools to carry out systematic MR and to set up a MR network.
The workshop will also show how to use the PRA’s unique market leading sources and capabilities, to gather public domain information specifically for coatings MR use. Participants will gain an understanding of a range of topics including: sources of information, types of MR, interviewing strategies selection and management of external consultants, competitor analysis, data analysis and presentation.
At the end of the workshop, each participant will be provided with a simple audit checklist to allow a preliminary assessment of the status of MR in their job and company. The course fee provides for some access to the course presenters to consider the implications of the audit.

Coatings for wood and wood-based substrates
The special needs of wood as a substrate are considered, with special reference to the coating of wood in buildings and furniture. Coating formulation is set in a context of legislation, operational requirements and the background of European standards activity.
The course opens with an account of the structure of wood at the microscopic and macroscopic level and the influence this will have on the performance of coatings. Derived products such as MDF and other board products are also considered.
For exterior coatings special emphasis is placed on the issues influencing durability and service life. The hazards facing wood in buildings from moisture,sunlight and biological attack will be linked to the principal lines of defence through good design combined with appropriate surface coatings and preservation treatments. In considering solutions, both maintenance and industrial coating practices will be critically reviewed.
Interior coatings will include flooring and furniture. The need to meet VOC and other legislation has created the need to change from traditional to “compliant”coatings. Operational factors then become major determinants on the choice of technology, which can include water-borne, high solids, powder and radiation curing.
There will be some flexibility within the course to meet specific interests of attendees.
Who should attend
The course will be useful for those involved in any aspect of formulating or specifying coatings for wood. In the case of buildings, this would include the maintenance of existing structures. Detailed technical knowledge is not required.

Introduction to paint and surface coatings technology markets for coatings substrates
This intensive 4-day course seeks to provide a firm foundation in the technology of organic surface coatings.
The course contains an overview of the raw materials used in surface coatings and their contribution to the final properties of the coatings.
Several changes have been made to the traditional course.
A new section on Additives introduces the main features of additives and considers their classification and function. A distinction is made between additives which:
are necessary to realise inherent properties (e.g. pigment disperser, drier or curing agent);
confer an additional desirable property (e.g. rheology modifier and biocide); and
overcome an undesirable effect (e.g. antifoam and anti-flooding).

The sections on pigments and high solids have been revised.
The study of the coatings systems emphasises the changes taking place in modern technology.

Radiation curing technology training course

New study from Ceresana Research: continued growth of the PVC market
Polyvinyl chloride continues to be one of the world’s most crucial plastics. As one of the oldest and most used products of the plastics industry,PVC came under attack 20 years ago by environmentalist groups. After numerous scientific investigations and improvement measures, the industry calmed the situation down: the environmental aspects of this durable and fireproof material are now often looked upon positively, the relatively minimal need for oil is also considered to be advantageous. A new market study from Ceresana Research(Figure 1) shows that the PVC branch can expect to see continued growth.
Constant upward trend
Last year, the PVC world market reached a volume of 34 million tons, whereas in the year 2000 demand had barely amounted to 24 million tons. However, the 5 per cent annual rate of growth seen in the past will probably not continue. Nevertheless, Ceresana Research expects global PVC demand to increase by an average of 2 per cent per year, despite the precarious financial crisis. The comprehensive study explains through individual regions and countries, why PVC demand is forecasted to total more than 40 million tons by the year 2016.
PVC’s uniqueness
While Middle Eastern nations are implementing enormous expansions in production capacity for many other plastics, such as polypropylene and polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE), with PVC they are not able to profit as much from their abundance of raw materials. The reason for this: PVC consists of only 43 per cent of the petroleum/natural gas derivative ethylene. For the most part,PVC is made up of chlorine, which can be obtained in a multitude of regions from the extensive supply of salt. PVC is particularly interesting to other world regions for this very reason. This study from Ceresana Research analyzes demand divided by application area, as well as production, capacities, revenue, and flow of trade in 61 countries, from the years 2000 to 2016.
Growth in the Asian Pacific region
The majority of PVC manufacturers are located in China, whereby these often represent small, aged acetylene-based factories. Nevertheless, an increased number of modern production facilities with capacities of 400,000 tons or more are being constructed throughout the People’s Republic. Correspondingly,the trade balance is also changing: China is constantly becoming less dependent upon imports, and by 2009 PVC export amounts are expected to surpass import totals. PVC manufacturers in India are profiting from rising domestic demand. In contrast, the USA is dealing with excess capacity: production capacity decreases in the amount of 2 million tons are anticipated over the next several years,because otherwise no economical degree of efficiency will be reached.
The construction industry is propelling PVC demand
Of the nine primary application areas, whose development is extensively analyzed in the market study over the short- and long-term, the majority of global PVC demand currently originates from building construction and civil engineering, that is to say demand for pipes (38 per cent) and for window profiles (20 per cent). Other important areas of application include for example, films and sheeting, cable insulation, flooring, and shoes, as well as medical products, such as intravenous drip lines. However, substantial differences exist between the various regions. Demand for windows is rising considerably in Russia, for example, while in Asia pipe production is playing a vital role for PVC.
