The modern printing ink is a carefully balanced product formulated to do a specific job. It combines solvents, synthetic resins, pigments and additives selected to give a specific set of properties, often on a selected substrate. The role of additives is two‐fold — they can either be added at the ink manufacturing stage to modify a basic formulation or added at press side at the discretion of the printer.
