No calling, profession or trade is without molochs but we have never denied the UK paint industry generally contains a bevy of talent, much of which is formidable and high‐minded; a large proportion of this resides within the refinish sector, long nurtured as a result of historical interbreeding and traditional conservatism. Of course, in recent years UK prime companies and groupings within this once sceptred isle have been diluted (if we use the right word) with newcomers from mainland Europe and the New World. Newcomers, we might add, just as bright—and sometimes brighter—than the once ethnic majority. It is, as we write, strange but true only one refinish paint supplier is UK owned, the Germans, Dutch and Americans between them, dominating the market. Does such a state matter?
