The officers and Award Committee of the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) of the American Chemical Society anounce that the recipient of the 1990 Roy W. Tess Award in Coatings is Dr. Walter K. Asbeck. This award, established to recognize outstanding contributions in the fields of coatings science, technology and engineering, is given to Dr. Asbeck in acknowledgement of his significant achievements in a variety of areas, including his landmark introduction of the concept of critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC), as well as his basic contributions in the areas of coatings rheology and adhesion. Dr. Asbeck's work led to the development of several major types of testing equipment, including the CPVC Cell, the Band Viscometer, the Brusho‐meter, and the Hesiometer. Through nineteen journal and book publications, nine Gordon Conference papers, and over one hundred invited lectures, he has firmly established his reputation as a seminal thinker in the fields of coatings science and technology, and the body of work which he has created over the length of his distinguished career has established him as a key innovator in the industry.
