ICI Surfactants is developing ‘Atpol’ E surfactants as alternatives to alkyl‐phenol ethoxylates (APEs) used in emulsion polymerisation, in anticipation of the probable phasing out of APEs from the polymer industry. APEs are already scheduled to be removed from other applications, for example, by 1995 they will no longer be used in domestic detergents and will be gone from industrial detergents by the year 2000.
