Perhaps the most outstanding growth story among U.K. coatings manufacturers is that of Mebon Paints Ltd, founded by Bill Meakin and John Bourne in 1963. Not least because the last 17 years has seen a drastic decline in the number of independent surface coating manufacturers, with many old established companies with far greater assets than Mebon had in its first decade either being swallowed up or going to the wall. With emphasis on protective coatings, today Mebon supplies coatings for such projects as the Flotta Oil Terminal and Sullom Voe Terminal, numerous North Sea oil platforms, oil refineries, steelworks and power stations, and ranging geographically from Korea to Canada. Not bad going for a company that is still small by International Paint or ICI standards.
