Coatings technology foresight

The British Coatings Federation recently organised a study of future technical needs of the industry and the resulting impact on people's skills and knowledge. The research and compilation of the final report was carried out by Jeff Crawforth, a consultant. Some of the technical results of the study are as follows:

  • Paint The priority technical issues facing the sector are the increasing use of high solids systems; increasing demands on VOC control;increasing demands on waste control. The people most affected are development chemists, managers and end users.

  • Printing inks The priority technical issues are legislation, waste disposal, VOC emissions, IT (information technology) and resins from renewable sources, affecting most groups of people working in this sector.

  • Powder coatings Priority technical issues are increasing pressure from H & S issues; wider and more complex raw material and powder ranges. Development, chemists, sales, end users and raw material suppliers are those affected.
