Electrostatic spraying

Finishing Excellence 1997 saw a demonstration by ITW Finishing Systems on the application of water based paints using an electrostatic spray gun system. The demonstration featured ITW Ransburg's Aviator control pack in conjunction with an REA-90 electrostatic spray gun and Aquatank waterborne isolation tank.

The Ransburg Aviator unit comprises of a turbine pack producing a low voltage charge to the spray gun. This low voltage is converted by the integral cascade within the spray gun to produce the electrostatic charge with which to charge the paint.

There are no electrical inputs to the control pack, purely air to drive the turbine, therefore the system is stated to be suitable for use within Class 1, Division 1 areas. The portability of the complete electrostatic system is increased as the unit can be mounted near any air line.

The ITW Ransburg Aviator pack can be used in conjunction with the Ransburg REA-70 or REA-90 air spray guns and also with the REM air assisted airless unit. The lack of any moving components within the gun, i.e. a turbine, makes the gun easier to handle, eliminates vibrations and reduces fatigue to the operator.

Both the REA-70 and REA-90 guns are transformable from standard spray to HVLP and are compatible with both solvent and water based materials.

The Ransburg Aviator and REA-90 will be demonstrated with the Aquatank. The Ransburg Aquatank can be supplied in 2 and 5 gallon capacities and is available with or without agitator. The Aquatank is an isolation chamber used to contain high voltage from ground for water based applications. Using pressure pot technology, water based paint passes through the REA shielded hose assembly to the gun.

The Ransburg Aquatank eliminates the need for costly isolation stands and interlocking. Similarly to standard pressure feed tanks, with a simple connection of air and fluid lines the unit is ready for use.
