Extra fast-drying epoxy coatings

Keywords Coatings,Epoxy coatings, Fast-drying, Jotun

Jotun Paints has launched two high-build epoxy coatings which combine very short drying times with single-coat dry film thicknesses up to 250 microns. As a result, Jotun believes it can now offer a choice of very effective three-coat protective systems which can be applied in one day.

Of the two new products,Jotaspeed ZP is a primer/intermediate coating which is pigmented with zinc phosphate and red in colour. The other product, Jotaspeed MIO, is an intermediate coating pigmented with micaceous iron oxide and grey in colour. Both have a solids content of approximately 67 per cent by volume.

At 35°C, a 200-micron DFT coat of either of the Jotaspeed formulations will reportedly be surface dry in only 30 minutes, and will be hard dry and ready for recoating in just 90 minutes. At 23°C, the film is stated to be surface dry in only 45 minutes, and ready for recoating in two hours. Such short recoating times are thought to virtually eliminate contamination, so that neither washing nor cleaning is normally necessary between coats.

In addition to the savings that result from the short recoating times, the reduced time in the production plant means less risk of damage during handling and transport. Further, other work on the structure can be carried out soon after application without damage to the paint film. Application cost savings are particularly significant in maintenance work.

A low VOC content of 325g/litre, means that the Jotaspeed coatings are believed to have reduced impacts on health and the environment. They cure at temperatures down to 5°C.

It is reported that the Jotaspeed coatings have been successfully tested, in the laboratory and in the field, both alone and as part of coating systems. Ambient test conditions have ranged from the Arctic clime of Norway to the hot, aggressive conditions of Abu Dhabi.

Jotaspeed ZP and Jotaspeed MIO can be applied directly to steel blast cleaned to Sa 21Ž2 standard, or to an approved zinc-rich epoxy primer. The products are said to be suitable for a very wide variety of applications both onshore and offshore, including bridges, cranes, stationary-tank exteriors, skips and many smaller manufactured articles.

By overcoating the new Jotaspeed coatings with a choice from the Jotun range of topcoats, any of a variety of extremely effective three-coat systems can be obtained. Many of these systems, given the specified drying conditions, can be completed during a working day.

Although not intended for immersion, Jotaspeed coatings claim very good resistance to water, as well as to abrasion. Their resistance to solvents and corrosion are also excellent.
