Powder coating in liquid form
Powder coating in liquid form
Powder coatings, including ECTFE (ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene), protect components from chemical attack but suffer from:
- 1.
Electrostatic application is a problem with complex shapes.
- 2.
Components often need pre-heating (+350°C), which raises energy costs– as well as being dangerous to handle.
Whitford Plastics claim to offer an alternative with a liquidised ECTFE coating, Dykor 404, which can be applied at room temperature via HVLP spray and carries no electrical charge. They say that the new development will have a significant impact on industries that live with the drawbacks of powder coatings. The Dykor 404, a water-borne dispersion, is VOC compliant and needs no special primer. Films of 400 microns per coat can be achieved, with a thickness of up to 2mm, reducing the number of cycles and saving time and energy.
