Draeger Safety informs us that its new Saver PP positive pressure Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (EEBA) is designed to provide safe and unhampered escape from hazardous environments where breathing has become difficult or endangered. Claiming high performance protection against potentially hazardous gases and vapours in any application, the Saver PP (Plate 8) is said to combine leading edge technology with reliability and ease of use.

Developed by Draeger in consultation with end users, the Saver PP is reported to be fully operational as soon as the carrying system is opened and is simple to re-set in the event of a false alarm. Housed within an instantly recognisable orange bag complete with photo-luminescent panels, it is said to be easy to locate in very low ambient light or poor visibility conditions and can be used with other forms of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets and ear protectors.

Featuring the same pneumatic components as the new PA90 Plus Breathing Apparatus, this lightweight, compact escape system is believed to provide low breathing resistance and a consistent air flow rate at all cylinder pressure levels. In addition, the pressure reducer is said to ensure excellent flow characteristics whilst the positive pressure Lung Demand Valve has a balanced piston design which is first-breath activated and extremely quiet in use.

Supplied complete with Draeger's tried and tested Panorama Nova facemask, the Saver PP also claims low exhalation resistance, a close and comfortable fit and a self demisting visor for clear vision. In use, the pressure gauge can be inspected quickly and easily, without dismantling or adjustments, via a transparent viewing window on the outside of the bag. Once depleted, the cylinder can be charged using standard charging connectors.

Thought to be ideal for use in any industrial environment, the Saver PP is reported to be fully approved to EN402 and can be supplied with 10 or 15 minute duration as well as a wide range of accessories. These include storage cabinets for both indoor and outdoor use, spare cylinders, and an anti-static bag for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. A waistbelt can also be provided as an option to prevent excessive movement when the set is worn in the ready position.

Many industrial pollutants are toxic or carry the risk of explosion and it is essential that any such contaminants are assessed quickly and easily to avoid a risk to health. This is particularly true where a leak or spillage may have occurred. For this reason Draeger also announces the launch of an industrial HazMat kit to help determine the size and nature of the problem.

Believed to be ideal for use by anyone who may be required to test for the presence of hazardous materials, the kit is said to be suitable for use in confined spaces as well as in spillage cleanup operations and other emergencies. Enabling a decision to be made as to the noxious or explosive nature of a pollutant, it can also be used to determine approximate concentration levels.

Contained within a strong, heavy duty carrying case, the kit has been carefully designed to suit a number of different, potentially hazardous situations. As such, it can be supplied complete with a selection of DraegerTubes and a Draeger Accuro hand bellows pump to encompass most eventualities or, for specific applications, can be fully customised to meet exact user requirements.

Comprising a box each of 12 recommended DraegerTubes for use in typical industrial applications, the kit makes provision for a further two boxes of user-defined Tubes. Three simultaneous test kits are also included. Two of these are designed for use with inorganic gases or in fire assessment situations, whilst a third allows detection of the five most common organic gas groups.

When used with DraegerTubes, the Accuro is said to provide accurate, intrinsically safe detection and measurement of more than 500 gases. Considered ideal for use in paint and chemical plants, as well as many other industrial applications, it carries mining approval and is suitable for use in hazardous or explosive environments.

According to Draeger, unlike other hand pumps, its Draeger Accuro can be used single-handedly. Light in weight, corrosion resistant and easy to grip, it leaves one hand free to manoeuvre and is particularly beneficial in potentially dangerous air sampling applications where personnel are required to climb ladders or to work on gantries or in confined spaces. A tube opener and an extension hose for taking measurements within tanks are also included.

Various spares items are also supplied within the HazMat kit together with a DraegerTube handbook, a record card for incident reporting and a chart showing Draeger recommendations for the selection of different Tubes where the particular hazard is unknown.

Should additional gas detection systems be required, the HazMat case can also incorporate the portable Miniwarn multigas detector and charger and a Draeger Chip Measurement System (CMS). Specifically developed to ensure accurate, reliable spot measurements of gas and vapour concentrations with minimal user training, the handheld CMS combines intelligent operation with straightforward user instructions to provide an immediate, true digital readout without the need for further evaluation.

Based on its extensive knowledge of industrial hazard monitoring, Draeger recommends that the following DraegerTubes are contained within the kit:Polytest, Ethyl Acetate 200/a, Methyl Bromide 5/b, Ammonia 0.25/a, Benzene 15/a,Hydrocarbons 0.1%, Acetone 100/b, Carbon Monoxide 10/b, Alcohol 100/a, Acetic Acid 5/a, Oxygen 5%/b, Carbon Dioxide 0.1%/a.

In addition to the HazMat kit Draeger offers a wide variety of gas detection equipment for all types of pollution control and/or environmental monitoring applications.
