Dürr Limited, the Warwick-based systems specialists, have recently added a new tool to their Sales Department. Virtual reality video presentations of equipment and machinery that show complete, working three-dimensional equipment and operations can be written on to a CD and sent to any customer, anywhere.
To create the virtual representations, Dürr engineers take original CAD drawings of each component – the same drawings used to manufacture the equipment – and convert them into 3D. These 3D components are then assembled to recreate the device within the virtual world of the computer. Joints are linked together and kinematic motion is added to reproduce exactly the operational behaviour of the equipment.
Recently Dürr UK created a virtual reality representation of their innovative Skillet/Twin-Trolley System (TTS) conveyor technology, which combines the advantages of a carrier-based system (with the ability to have inclines,declines, bends and junctions) with the flexibility of a roller bed system.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the benefits of an animation. It's an opportunity to show systems operation down to every detail and is the perfect complement to our already existing simulation applications, which allow for "what if?" situations and solutions to production problems. Essentially, a virtual reality presentation is the basic modeling process taken to a new level and the quality of the animation is almost photo-realistic. It is as good as watching it for real.
The virtual reality program can create visualizations of scenarios and operations, i.e. how it would work in a production environment, and can also be used for assessment purposes for new or modified installations.
