Users, manufacturers and inspection organisations have collaborated in the production of the guideline VDI/VDE 35 19 part 2. It is produced by the "Level measurement" committee of the VDI/VDE-Gesellschaft Mess-und Automatisierungstechnik (VDI/VDE Society for Measurement and Automatic Control).

Level measurement is an individual task in industrial use. The measurement method has always to be selected individually and to be adjusted in order to measure the level of the respective liquid or solid under given conditions. The guideline VDI/VDE 35 19 part 2 completes part 1 by electrical and other physical methods. These following measuring methods are dealt with in part 2: electrical resistance and capacitive method, heat flux method, radiometric method, sound and ulrasonic method, microwave and optical method.

The guideline VDI/VDE 35 19 provides information on the assessment of possible measuring procedures for liquid, lumpy, flowable, thixotropic, gelatinous and pasty, substances including mixtures of such substances and provides instructions on the appropriate performance of these measurements. Level measurement includes both procedures for continuous and quasi-continuous measurement of levels and also for limit level detection, e.g. overfill safety devices, run dry protection and similar. Boundary layer measurement is dealt with under the particular measuring method described.
