Any painted product manufactured in quantity is subject to strict quality control to ensure continuity of colour. In order to closely control colour matching, most manufacturers employ standard colour test panels, which themselves have to be pre- painted to exact quality standards. These panels are also used for other standard quality assurance tests, such adhesion, gloss,texture and opacity.
Sheen Instruments, in conjunction with end users in the automotive and consumer products markets, have developed an automatic panel spraying unit which they believe is becoming the industry norm for the production of standard 100× 150 mm painted metal or plastic test panels (Plate 8).
The latest range of Sheen automatic multi- panel sprayers offers a wide choice of options, enabling them to be tailored to simulate real- life production situations, and produce a test sample with a painted surface which is as close as possible to that of the product it represents.
Plate 8 The "4800N" pneumatically operated automatic panel sprayer from Sheen Instruments Ltd. This model can accommodate two sprayguns and up to 15 test panels, and includes provision for electrostatic spraying.
Pneumatically operated and stated to be intrinsically safe when used with flammable solvent based paint systems, the automatic sprayers maintain precise control of process parameters such as spraygun distance, position and traversing speed, atomisation, flow rate, drying time and test panel lift height. Drying is by controlled filtered air.
Other features include counters for the number of coats and number of spraygun passes, flash-off and digital traverse timers, and provision for electrostatic spraying both HVLP and bell. Single and twin-gun versions are available and up to 15 single-gun and 12 twingun panels can be accommodated. All models are stated to comply with ASTM D823/A.
