BASF presented a wide range of innovative solutions to coating problems at RadTech Europe 2003. As one of the leading manufacturers of radiation curable coating raw materials, BASF presented new possible applications for this eco-efficient technology (Plate 1).

These included new urethane acrylates for exterior and interior applications from the Laromer® range of unsaturated acrylic resins. They distinguish themselves through excellent mechanical film properties such as elasticity and viscosity. The new urethane acrylates are mainly used in UV coatings for plastics, wood or derived timber products and metals.
The coating of the MCC Smart was cured using UV in carbon dioxide, a process developed by BASF (Laroluxe process).
Highly scratch-resistant UV coatings for automobile OEM were a further BASF highlight at RadTech. Pre-polymers modified with nanoparticles in the Laromer®range provide significant improvements in scratch resistance. They can be used in a wide range of applications, such as for example, parquet varnishes and coatings for plastics.
Benefits to customers through BASF expertise in both pigments and binders is shown in the example of pigmented UV water-based coatings. With the aqueous,unsaturated acrylate resins from the Laromer® product range and the stir-in pigment Xfast®, BASF has developed formulations for pigmented UV water-based coatings. The main applications for these are the wood and furniture industries.
