Huntsman improves storage stability with two new additions to MDI range

Huntsman Polyurethanes, the leader in MDI technology, have launched two new MDI variants in its extensive Suprasec® range. Suprasec 4102 and Suprasec 1398 are designed to improve liquid stability and to allow easier material management, helping to facilitate storage conditions and reduce costs for the manufacturers of adhesives, coatings and elastomer (ACE) systems. Suprasec 4102 and Suprasec 1398 can be used for the production of quasi and full pre- polymers, replacing pure MDI in the production of clear and liquid stable elastomeric pre-polymers for applications such as spray and cast polyurethane elastomers, PU coatings and adhesives. In comparison to pure MDI, which needs to be stored frozen, Suprasec 4102 is a liquid material offering improved lower temperature stability, which means that it can be stored more cheaply and conveniently at room temperature. It can also reduce handling costs and overall waste during production while opening up new application possibilities to customers who want to develop two component warm cast polyurethane elastomer systems. In contrast, Suprasec 1398 can increase the longevity of a liquid variant's storage life without losing most of the unique characteristics of pure MDI. By using Suprasec 1398, also called Easy Pure, it is now possible to store materials for twice as long, which is a significant improvement for customers with limited through-put of pure MDI – and that longer storage life means more cost effective bulk quantities can be used. In addition, Suprasec 1398 shows a slower crystallisation rate, making the material less sensitive to cold spots, which sometimes occur in the connection pipes between the bulk storage and the reactor. The Suprasec 1398 can be widely used for applications like hot cast elastomers for engineering parts where dynamic performance is of importance, synthetic leather or thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). Johan van Dyck is the Technical Manager Elastomers & FW EAME at Huntsman Polyurethanes' ACE division. He said: “pure MDI is a unique material which provides excellent elastomer properties. However, it is very sensitive to storage conditions and has a limited storage life in a liquid state. Our two new additions to the Suprasec family have been developed in line with customer demand to improve storage life and handling in order to reduce waste and, therefore, reduce costs.” Huntsman Polyurethanes is a world leader in the field of MDI technology with an unparalleled range of products. It produces chemicals and systems for customers in the construction, refrigeration insulation, packaging, automotive seating and interiors, furniture, footwear, composite wood products, TPU, and ACE markets.
