Purpose

This paper aims to share information on the work of Larkhall and District Volunteer Group (LDVG), the importance and value of our volunteers and the benefits of volunteering in older age.

Design/methodology/approach

The work took place at LDVG’s centre in Larkhall over a nine-year period, spanning both pre- and post-COVID contexts from 2016 to 2025. Drawing on the author’s experience as Project Coordinator, responsible for volunteers within the organisation, this paper examines the significance of older volunteers and the benefits that volunteering provides.

Findings

People volunteer for all sorts of reasons. They want to feel part of something, give back to their community, share knowledge and spend time doing something worthwhile.
