Two thousand was a good year—iTunes was introduced and the first issue of the new journal, The Quarterly Review of Distance Education, was published. The editorial team consisted of myself, coeditor Charles Schlosser, and editorial manager Kristin Sparks. The first issue had seven articles, a research brief, an international review by Steve Wheeler, and a series of research abstracts.

This year, 20 years later, The Quarterly Review still thrives (can we imagine a world without iTunes?) Beginning with Issue 1 of Volume 20, Charles “Charlie” Schlosser will move to emeritus editor status and will be replaced as managing editor by Anymir Orellana. She is a highly respected scholar and professional, and The Quarterly Review is fortunate to have her.

As I am sure Anymir would agree, no one will really replace Charlie. He was the consummate journalist with a broad understanding of our field and a sincere commitment to excellence. There is no doubt in my mind that countless errors by me never became “slips that pass in the type” because of Charlie. He fixed things, improved things, and was the driving force that kept the rest of us moving forward.

It is our hope that Dr. Charles Schlosser, emeritus professor from the Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern University, will remain an active participant of our “smallband” of editors. We also welcome Vanaja Nethi as assistant editor, and Deborah Seepersaud and Yusra Visser as assistant editors for social media.
