This study aims to investigate the viability of Ethiopian violet tree (Enjeji), a locally sourced bast fiber from East Gojjam, Ethiopia, for backpack production and explore its properties and potential for creating a unique and sustainable product.
This study followed a process that included fiber collection, washing, bleaching, spinning, dyeing with madder root, table loom weaving and developing the final product. Traditional techniques such as manual spinning and table loom weaving have been used. Hand embroidery was used for the embellishment.
This study found that Ethiopian violet tree (Enjeji) fibers possess properties suitable for backpack production, including strength, flexibility and aesthetic appeal. Traditional techniques add a unique cultural dimension to backpacks, making them appealing to environmentally conscious consumers. The developed backpack exhibited promising performance characteristics, with the fabric having an average tensile strength of 46.476 MPa and seams averaging 6.946 MPa, allowing it to successfully withstand a 5-kg load for 10 min.
This study examined the utilization of a specific, locally sourced Ethiopian violet tree (Enjeji) in a backpack product, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern product design to achieve sustainable and culturally rich outcomes.
