The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review to analyze advancements in clothing sizing systems over the past two decades, evaluating their impact on garment design and manufacturing.
A keyword-based search identified 61 peer-reviewed articles (2000–2022) from Web of Science and Scopus databases. Papers were screened for relevance to size charts and categorized by application. This study examines anthropometric data collection, statistical modeling and industry implementation.
Key developments include three-dimensional body scanning, data-driven sizing and adaptive technologies. However, challenges persist, such as regional sizing inconsistencies, limited inclusivity for diverse body types and a gap between research and industry adoption. The findings emphasize the need for consumer-centric sizing solutions.
By offering a structured overview of historical developments, current methodologies and emerging trends, this study provides valuable insights for apparel designers, fashion engineers and researchers. Ultimately, it aims to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical applications, fostering more data-driven, inclusive and globally relevant sizing solutions for the apparel industry.
This study consolidates two decades of research, offering a comprehensive assessment of methodological progress and practical barriers. It provides actionable insights for improving size standardization, fit accuracy and meeting consumer demands.
