Suggests that orthopaedics appears to be an attractive market for rapid prototyping systems manufacturers but notes that the geometry of bones allows the manufacture of implant prototypes using conventional machining. Compares the development and manufacture of a surgical tool manufactured by rapid prototyping with conventional cast and machining methods. Concludes that rapid prototyping has a part to play in reducing time and cost, particularly in the development phase.
