A methodology for study of selective area laser deposition (SALD), a gas based solid freeform fabrication technique, has been developed that proceeds through three steps: selection of a precursor, thermodynamic calculations for deposition conditions, and experimentation. Presents proof of the usefulness of these three steps in depositing high quality (transparent) titanium oxide. Stresses the connections between the steps and shows how this approach can be applied to SALD of other materials, including complex ceramics, intermetallics, and/or composite systems.
