Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is one of the most studied and fastest-growing additive manufacturing (AM) techniques due to its ability to produce larger components with unique complexities. This article aims to review the techniques and methods for improving the final surface quality of the finished product through the WAAM technique.
This article presents a review of WAAM process techniques through the analysis of process parameters for optimizing the final manufactured products. The review covers factors such as wire feed speed, deposition type, temperature control and the application of various forms of artificial intelligence, discussing the impact of these variables on surface quality and the performance of the fabricated components.
WAAM is a promising technology for the industry as it can be used with different metal alloys, offers relatively low costs and enables the fabrication of components with unique characteristics. Surface quality of the components is crucial for their application, being directly related to process planning and various parameters such as feed speed, interpass temperature and cooling time. WAAM is undergoing intensive research and technological advancements, particularly concerning the use of intelligent control for defect detection and final product quality optimization, aiming to improve overall process efficiency.
