This must surely be the most comprehensive and cosmopolitan publication about the novel ever attempted. The depth and breadth of its scope is indicated by the fact that although there is an overall editor in Paul Schellinger, he has been supported, in the first place, by two assistant editors in Christopher Hudson and Marijke Rijsberman, secondly by a team of 21 advisers, and thirdly, by more than 350 worldwide contributors who, between them, have provided the 650 very substantial articles comprising the work.
