The Asian American population is increasing both in its size and diversity. Asian American Literature contains entries on 45 poets, novelists, dramatists, essayists, writers of memoirs and short story writers. “The first novelist of Chinese ancestry to be published in the United States”, Winifred Eaton (Onoto Watanna) (1875‐1954), whose Miss Nume of Japan was published in 1899, is included.
