Literature and place is a study of long fascination: Sharp (1912) was among the first to treat of it in the modern context which has continued ever since through a range of authors, approaches and localities, and shows no sign of diminishing. The commonest approach is the guidebook: the classic remains Eagle and Carnell (1977) especially in later revised editions, while Ousby (1990) is also a popular and valuable work.
