The first of this two‐volume set, edited by Krueger, covers writers who made their mark in the nineteenth century. It does not claim to be exhaustive, yet manages to contain entries for a range of writers, fiction and non‐fiction, well known and more obscure. The introduction sets the scene for the reader, reminding us that the nineteenth century was a period of great social and political change.
