It is not unreasonable to expect breadth and depth of coverage from any of the volumes in the Cambridge Companion to Literature series. The Cambridge Companion to the African American Novel delivers this under the editorship of Maryemma Graham, who founded the project on the history of Black writing at the University of Kansas in 1984.
