Material in this subject encyclopedia has been extracted from the ninth edition of the McGraw‐Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology (2002) and is also based on the fifth edition of the same publisher's general Concise Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. McGraw‐Hill have published a number of concise encyclopedias based on these earlier works, others of which will be reviewed in these columns, so the company are certainly getting their money worth out of the initial publications.
