A Conspectus of Scribal Hands Writing English, 960‐1100

If it is sometimes difficult or impossible to know who was the author of a particular piece of medieval writing, what about the scribe who recorded it? Early English writing comes down to us from a range of original manuscripts in libraries across the UK and Europe, all of which were recorded in Neil Ker's monumental catalogue (Ker, 1957) which itself built on work by Humphrey Wanley at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
