Although the beginnings of the venture capital industry can be traced back to the 1920s, it was not until the 1980s that venture capital really took off. It now is a billion dollar industry with the UK industry being the largest and most developed in Europe and second in world importance behind the USA. According to the British Venture Capital Association, over £14 billion has been invested in over 14,000 companies since 1983.
