As we move ever further in time away from the events, a sheen of romanticism seems to blur the air war of World War I: the idea of some kind of twentieth century knights jousting in the skies in brightly coloured (on the German side at least) scouts or fighter aeroplanes actually hides a grim reality of violence, death and short life expectancy in an infant weapon.
