I remember from my days in commercial libraries the problem of obtaining reliable or even up‐to‐date economic or statistical information from many countries. Now it is all seeming much easier, especially where newly‐independent countries are keen to attract investment and trade and see the provision of their own information as an important step in that process. So this publication, financed by the EU Tacis Programme, provides just such data for one new state from the former USSR. Summary statistics are followed by a review of the general outlook and then specialist chapters on: prices, wages and inflation; money and credit; government and finance; financial markets; production; employment and labour market; balance of payments and foreign exchange; privatization and structural changes; living standards; and statistical tables. Each chapter has a very brief text with figures and graphs, followed by statistical tables giving greater detail. This is typical of a range of publications which are useful to update or supplement the various standard reference titles (such as Europa’s Regional Surveys of the World) and are equally useful to know about in case of interest or an enquiry for more information about or dealing with the particular country.
