To most people “inward investment” implies companies, particularly foreign‐owned manufacturers, establishing new plants in economically depressed areas. Probably the best known case in the UK is Nissan setting up shop near Sunderland, but numerous other examples abound particularly in South Wales, Central Scotland and North‐east England.
