By educational background being a classical Aristotelian, I expect things to start at the beginning, proceed through their middle and reach an end; but sometimes I can accept the wisdom of starting in the middle. In launching a new series on the technical development of the aeroplane, it probably makes commercial sense to start with the Second World War as this seems still to be the most popular selling period in aviation literature. But it also makes technical sense as the Second World War was a pivotal era in the history of aircraft development. The war began at the end...
