The initiative of the Committee of Concerned Pacific Scholars in seeking to help conservation activists locate social scientists with Pacific Islands expertise, has aroused considerable interest. The first edition in June 1996 of the Directory (RR/97/79) has been widely welcomed. Many organizations, such as the USA Peace Corps, asked for copies to distribute to their staff.

The second edition is expanded and updated, listing scholars and scientists from North America, Europe and the Pacific Islands. The emphasis is on those countries, such as Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Irian Jaya and Vanuatu, where logging is destroying forests at...
