John A. Britton, Professor of History at Francis Marion University, first came to my notice as author of Carleton Beals: A Radical Journalist in Latin America (1987), an admirable study of a writer with clear‐eyed, sympathetic understanding of the states and peoples of Latin America, and a courageous critic of USA “big stick” machinations. Britton’s other works include Educación y Radicalismo en México, 1931‐1940 (1976), and the prize‐winning Revolution and Ideology: The Image of the Mexican Revolution in the United States (1995).
