The first edition of Adolman and Dworkin was published in 1972 under the title Contemporary Novel: A Checklist of Critical Literature on the British and American Novel since 1945. In their brief preface to the second edition the compilers note that they “have enlarged the scope of their selections, as indicated by the new subtitle, to works by writers in English anywhere in the world, for example Ghana, Nigeria, West Indies, the Caribbean, India” and so on.
