Population of States and Counties of the United States 1790‐1990

This work tabulates the populations of the individual states (and their constituent counties) of the USA from the first census in 1790, to 1990. Surprisingly this is the first compilation to provide full comparative listings since 1900. The USA was one of the first countries in the world to conduct a regular census of population and is mandated by the US constitution to ensure that the states elect representatives to Congress in proportion to their population.
