Airports have an important commercial and regional role far beyond their basic function of the coming and going of aircraft with their passengers and/or freight. Many smaller or regional airports have shown the potential for business and employment, although in Europe at least they remain subject to restrictive regulations which hamper their achievement of their full potential. It does seem the case, however, that the bigger the airport the bigger its local employment and commercial impact. On both a UK and European scale none is bigger than London’s Heathrow, also a major world facility by any yardstick.
