Modern Germany: An Encyclopedia of History, People and Culture, 1871‐1990

There can be no doubt about the importance of Germany in modern history, especially during the period covered by this encyclopaedia, from unification and throughout the twentieth century (back to reunification). Its impact on world affairs is obvious, but it has also exerted a major influence throughout the world by its impact in artistic, literary, cultural and intellectual activities. It is only surprising then that this seems to be the first encyclopaedia (in English at least) of its kind. While subject, inevitably, to some criticism of detail, it will stand overall as a most significant publishing achievement.
