Geography is a very visual subject: diagrams and illustrations can tell much more, and more clearly, than textual descriptions alone, and are very necessary to help explain phenomena and their development. I recall geographical walks in my secondary school days looking at local features which illustrated and explained concepts taught in the classroom; nowadays all this is presumably done by safer virtual media.
