The Sikh religion is a relative newcomer in the world of theology, being only about 500 years old. It developed among liberal Hindus who were under the influence of Islam, then politically dominant in India. The Sikhs share the Hindu belief in the transmigration of souls, and the Hindu doctrine of karma, but like Moslems, they believe in one God. However, they reject the ritual and ceremony of both Hindus and Moslems. Sikh women have long had equal rights with men. Their holy city is Amritsar in northern Punjab. Incidentally, the word Sikh simply means disciple.
