When a book achieves a fifth edition it has clearly become a classic, and this is no exception. The first edition, originally designed by Griselda Lewis’s husband John, came out in 1967 and was published by Studio Vista Ltd. Its successor was published in 1977 by Barrie and Jenkins. But the third enlarged edition was published by the Antique Collectors’ Club, which has clearly benefitted from the take‐over, because it published a fourth revised edition in 1987 and now, in 1999, the club is pleased to present a fifth revised edition.
