Descended from the six‐volume History of the Scientific and Cultural Development of Mankind, this later work is in seven volumes the first of which appeared in 1994. Each volume is edited by a team of internationally recognised scholars, and includes a general introduction, several thematic sections, dealing with the features of the period from a global viewpoint, and a series of regional chapters examining the issues in more detail, all of which are equipped with serviceable bibliographies.
