J. Welles Henderson is a wealthy American lawyer who has devoted his leisure, and his profits, to collecting marine memorabilia, which he eventually used to establish the Independence Seaport Museum, in Philadelphia. Its aim is to depict life at sea, mainly in the days of sail, through the material remains of that period, whether made by or for sailors or commemorating them, and the present volume is based entirely on the museum’s collections.
