This series, the first two volumes of which were considered at RR 99/395, continues with two of the most historic cities in the world, in their very different circumstances. Beijing dates back some 2,500 years while Berlin, a comparatively new town, needs no further comment on its role, especially in the twentieth century (one of the cover illustrations shows the end of the Berlin Wall, ten years ago). The format is identical to the two previous volumes with standard chapters covering a whole range of aspects of the cities, presenting facts about their specific subjects and allowing (even encouraging) comparisons from one to another.
London and Paris will be next up: our only complaint is that the series seems set to grow very slowly (four volumes a year); but in any event it looks like developing into a comprehensive, informative reference source for nine‐ to 12‐year‐old children.
