The computer has, by various means, put universal bibliographic control firmly back on our professional agenda. The technology is widely available (to compile, to publish and to receive), as well as networks (both telecommunications and, of course, of libraries and publishers), and above all there is a willingness (and increasingly a political imperative) to achieve what has often seemed a kind of holy grail.
