Sending a book on Effective Literature Searching for Students (the title of the earlier 1989 edition) to a reference librarian besieged by them is rather like waving a red rag to a curmudgeonly bull! “Effective” ‐ why bother?; “Literature” ‐ what is that?; “Searching” ‐ if only they would!; “Research” ‐ that pretentious word! But I shall do my best.

Starting with “Why search?”, the student is led to prepare the search, given a selection of sources and tools to use, told how to keep records, how to get the material, how to evaluate it, and how to cite references....
